Images of the Makahiki opening ceremony at Kaneiolouma in Poipu, Koloa. Gifts of native plants and Aloha are brought to the Heiau and distributed to the four directions and blessed by visiting cultural practitioners from neighboring islands. The Makahiki season is a special time of year for ancient Hawaiians. At one time Kaneiolouma was home to sporting events much like ancient Olympics, and traditional contests such as Taro planting. It is the goal of the project to bring these unique cultural treasures back to life with the completed Master Plan including educational programs and plans for a world-class Hawaiian cultural center.
